Santa Rosa is in the state of California and is the county seat of Sonoma County. It is one of the largest cities in California's Wine Country and has the distinction of being a film location for the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, "Shadow of a Doubt". The city forms part of the North Bay region and lies along U.S. Route 101, about 55 miles north of the city of San Francisco. Many creeks and lakes are found in and around the city, such as the Santa Rosa Creek, Lake Ralphine, Fountaingrove Lake and the Santa Rosa Creek Reservoir. Hood Mountain is the most prominent one seen from the city but Sonoma Mountain and Taylor Mountain are also visible. The importance of the house is the fact that it was the first dwelling to be built on the location of what was to become the city of Santa Rosa. Many old homes still exist on quiet streets, many of them dating from the Victorian age.

Santa Rosa is located at the southwestern entrance to the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, both part of California's well known Wine Country. Tours and tastings can be taken at the wineries and vineyards. Visit the Jack London State Historic Park and the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve, also in the same area. The Star House, with its high-powered telescope, gives visitors the opportunity to observe the heavens and the surrounding scenery.
